Definitions & FAQs

WHAT IS A PRIMARY PRODUCER?

Primary producers are the farmers or growers. They grow or breed the primary raw produce.

WHAT IS A SECONDARY PRODUCER?

Secondary producers are food/drink artisans. They use the primary produce to create a secondary product e.g. use mangoes to create a mangoe liqueur.

WHAT IS A TERTIARY PRODUCER?

Tertiary producers are restaurants/cafes/cooking studios. They use primary produce and/or secondary products in their menu e.g. use Pork from Farmer Jo and use cheese from a food artisan.

WHAT DOES 'LOCAL CONNECTIONS' MEAN?

It means there is a verified connection between two producers to show the public that there is genuine support and usage of local produce between these two producers (they have a business relationship with each other). Some businesses will have no verified local connections as it isn’t relevant to their business model (i.e. a lot of primary producers sell direct to wholesale markets) whereas other businesses may have lots of connections in the paddock to plate system.

Local Connections could also mean that there is a verified connection between a producer and an event (e.g. farmers' market) to show the public that their produce will be available at that event.

These verified Local Connections are verified at both ends of the connection. A producer will send a special request to another producer and they have the choice to either accept or decline the request. They must accept the request before their business connection becomes public on the website.

WHAT IS FOOD PROVENANCE?

Food Provenance is about knowing the root of where your food has come from (i.e. its point of origin) including how it was made and delivered to us.
