Welcome to the Darwin and surrounds region which includes the capital city of the Northern Territory as well as other highlights such as Litchfield National Park and the Tiwi Islands. No visit to this region is complete without seeing crocodiles, some of the colourful markets and the Aboriginal artwork. Tropical and native food is this region’s speciality.The Northern Territory has a very big indigenous population so the native food is different in the top end. The NT includes exotic foods such as Crocodile, Buffalo steaks, fresh seafood, succulent Barramundi, camel and tropical fruits and veg. Bush tucker (food of indigenous Australians when they lived off the land for 40,000 years) is included in a lot of restaurants in this region. Bush tucker includes wattle seed, native dukkha, lemon myrtle, bush tomatoes, bush yam, Yalke (bush onion), witchetty grubs, wallaby, kangaroo, native mustard cess, ruby saltbush, bush honey and Quandongs (native peach). Other non-native foods that have thrived in the desert region of NT include camel and dates.
