Welcome to the Capricornia region! This region has a rich mining history going back to the mid 1800’s and it is where the beef capital of Rockhampton meets the Southern Great Barrier Reef. This region’s speciality produce is premium, export quality local beef which is to be expected given that Rockhampton is claimed as the Beef Capital of Australia, however this region also celebrates local fresh seafood and sub-tropical produce. Head to the relaxed coastal town of Yeppoon for holiday fun and don’t forget to hop over to the nearby Great Keppel Island on the Southern Barrier Reef. Inland from Rockhampton you will find the historic town of Mt Morgan with its historic gold mine which you can do tours of. As you drive through the Capricornia region you will often see trains with very long carriages heaped with coal which has come from out west and is heading to the coastal city of Gladstone which is a hive of industry and large scale coal/gas projects. Rockhampton hosts the Beef Week festival every three years and hosts the annual Capricorn Food and Wine festival.
